The Ascent to the Col du Lion
The route to the Col du Lion via the Orlonde Refuge is one of the most spectacular high-alpine ascents in the Mont Blanc massif. Starting from the Orlonde Refuge (2,600m), hikers face a steep, rocky climb through scree and glacier terrain to reach the saddle at 3,554m.
This route is often used as a training ground for more technical climbs, including the famous Lion Ridge (ArĂȘte du Lion) which leads to the summit of the Matterhorn. The terrain is loose and exposed, requiring excellent fitness, a head for heights, and proper alpine gear.
The refuge itself offers a dramatic setting, nestled in a cirque of rock and ice. It is a crucial stopping point for those attempting the high passes of the region.
